Around this time last year, I was sitting at my kitchen table, mindlessly flipping through a catalog for some art school I had never heard of and was not even remotely considering attending. One page in particular caught my attention though; it featured an event where students come together to bring life and color to the city of Savannah by littering its beautiful park with impressive sidewalk art. I remember stopping to imagine myself strolling through as an outsider, but at this time last year, the thought of being a comfortable member of this community–let alone a student actually participating in the event–never even crossed my mind. It’s crazy how much life can change in such a short period of time, how differently our futures unfold and how far our plans deviate from the original visions we laid out–if we let them. I almost didn’t allow myself to take this risk last Spring, but now I can barely imagine myself in any other situation.
This weekend, I was honored to be a part of the NewBee Student Ambassadors group, working alongside nine of my new friends to create a tribute to our punny Student Ambassador hashtag, #imabee. Our drawing of “The Black Eyed Bees” may not have won any awards, but it was a fun bonding experience nonetheless. It’s hard to be disappointed when we were in the presence of this much talent!
